Chester City Centre Bridge Inspections

Good afternoon,

Please see the below information regarding bridge inspections in Chester city centre sent on behalf of Cheshire West and Chester Highways department.

I am writing to let you know that we need to close some of the roads in and around the city for a short time overnight to carry out detailed inspections of the bridges at Northgate, Watergate and Bridgegate.  It is a statutory duty for the Highway Authority to carry out inspections of this nature on all highway bridges and structures every six years.  Elevated working platforms are needed in the carriageway to give access to all parts of the bridges, hence the need for road closures.

To minimise disruption to traffic and businesses, work will take place overnight between 10pm and 5am on the following dates:

  • 11th August – Northgate Street will be reduced to a single 2.5m wide lane heading into the city.  A vehicle weight restriction of 3.5 tonnes will be in place.  Water Tower Street will be closed at the junction with Northgate Street but will be accessible via St Martin’s Way, King Street and Powys Court.
  • 12th August – Lower Bridge Street will be closed between Duke Street and the Old Dee Bridge.  Castle Drive will be closed at the junction with Lower Bridge Street but accessible from Grosvenor Road.
  • 13th August – Watergate Street, City Walls Road, New Crane Street and Nuns Road will be closed at the junction.

Signed diversion routes will be in place during the works.  For further information please contact Highways on 0300 123 7036.

Kind regards,
