The desire to reduce costs is the driving factor behind the proposals for a reduced frequency of collection and the introduction of wheelie bins for recyclable materials. However the consultation document and survey make no mention of the special arrangements for bagged household waste in terraced streets and city centre locations. If wheelie bins were forced on us, they would be left on our narrow pavements which would be a detrimental to our environment. We should be doing everything in our powers to keep the city centre and surrounding streets tidy and attractive to visitors.
The former system, where recyclable items were also bagged, had the advantage that nothing was left on the pavements after collection.
