The investigation work has found that the balustrade is in a better condition than expected and all necessary repairs have now been completed. Over the course of this week and next, the stonemasons will be undertaking some routine tasks including pointing and vegetation removal before the scaffold is taken down in the week beginning 13th September.
The scaffolding will be removed from the bridge under a series of five evening road closures from 7pm until 10.30pm. Lower Bridge Street will be closed between Castle Drive and Shipgate Street and a signed traffic diversion will be in place (pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to get through). This was the arrangement back in January when the scaffold was put up, with the closures planned to minimise disruption to traffic and to avoid noisy work operations taking place throughout the night.
The road will be open in between times but the city wall walkway over the bridge will stay closed throughout so that stonemasons can finish repairs to the inner faces of the parapets. There will be a few tasks to be completed at ground level in the week beginning 20th September but the road and walkway will be open to everybody.
